Eurocampers didn’t need me in this weekend, so I have some free time. In addition, this weekend hosts Minamicon – my favourite convention in the UK, and one I hate missing. However, this weekend happens to host a convention in Auckland, so I’m going to tend the pain with an anime painkiller.
Unfortunately, it’s all the way in Manakau, which takes over an hour by bus. In fact, its so long I honestly start to wonder if I got on the right route. Thankfully, I started seeing the right signs, and after five minutes, manage to spot someone in a Pikachu onesie and know I’m on the right track.
Armageddon is kind of like MCM Expo’s back home. There are several held throughout the year in different towns. This however, is one of the smaller ones – mostly due to where it’s held. It’s at the Vodaphone Event Centre, which isn’t all that big, but gives us 2 dealers room, and 2 stages.
Since it’s so small, it’s hard to say if this is what all conventions are like in New Zealand, but going from what I saw, conventions in Auckland still haven’t become cosplay crazy. It’s still a huge part, but a lot of costumes are casual, and there’s only a handful of outfits with impressive detail. The cosplay parade is more like the ones back home rather than Australia – people come on stage, pose and then walk off. This one only lasts five minutes (however, the competition is on Sunday, which I don’t attend, so maybe its different then). However, there’s also not too many non-official panels or events going on, so the community is a little quiet. Going to assume that’s due to the size more than habit. Going to another convention in April, so will be interesting to compare them.
If nothing else, I was able to grab some fandom tees and update my keyring collection.
