12th February – Bird on a Wire

So after several weeks of looking for work, I think I finally found the right job. It’s working for a restaurant called ‘Bird on a Wire’, who are going to be running a small stand at the pop up Globe Theatre that’s opening in a few weeks. I’ve got no restaurant experience, but between the Roadhouse, the bar and general customer service, there’s no way I can’t do this job.

The guy hiring seemed to think the same. The interview goes great and I leave the Ponsonby store in good spirits.

Unfortunately, several days later I get an email. The restaurant is no longer doing the theatre job, and my job is gone. I’m back to square one…and since I haven’t had much luck looking on my own, I snap and decide to go to the Job Search in Base Backpackers. You have to pay to join, but I’m having no luck on my own. Actually works out – turns out the Auckland University Book Store needs some temp work. Only three weeks instead of the ten I could have had, but can’t really complain.

I also have to wait a few more weeks before it starts too, so also keep an eye on the job boards. End up working a weekend at Eurocampers cleaning out campervans. It’s not great work, but 2 days covers my rent. They’re happy enough with my work that they decided to keep me on call – and I get another weekend out of them too. Might even make it full time once the temp job is over.

About Batale

I am an aspiring writer - though since I haven't written anything original in about 2 years, so calling me a writer is like calling a man who makes dinner every night a 5 star chef. I started this blog to force me to write. From the 1st January 2013, I intend to update this blog every day. If nothing interesting happens, I'll write about something that does interest me, whether that is a movie, a book, something I've heard about, or even some of my stories growing up.
